Papua as a sporting province

The idea of ​​making Papua a sporting province came to the fore in line with the achievements of the Papua Province in the recent XX PON and XVI PEPARNAS. An achievement that was achieved from long preparation and determination to show that Papua is capable of achieving high achievements in the biggest sporting event in Indonesia.


The statement was delivered by Plt. The Head of the Papuan Youth and Sports Service, Alexander Kapisa, represented the Regional Secretary (Sekda) for Papua at the "Launching and Strategic Discussion of Papuan Collaboration Towards a Sports Province" which was held on Friday (20/5/2022) at the Sultan Hotel, Jakarta.


He said the impetus for Papua to become a Sports Province was due to the availability of sports facilities and infrastructure in Papua. "The urge to become a sports province is also strengthened by the increasingly available sports facilities and infrastructure after the recent PON and Peparnas implementations. Currently there are 28 sports venues that have international standards or have been internationally certified by each sporting federation with a total asset value of Rp. 5 Trillion,” he said in a release received by the editors this afternoon.


Take advantage of the Venue


To support Papua to become a Sports Province, an academic study has been conducted. "We have also collaborated with the University of Cendrawasih, at the Faculty of Sports Science, to conduct a study related to whether Papua is worthy of being a Sports Province in Indonesia," he explained at the event which was attended by officials of ministries/agencies at the Central level such as Deputy IV of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Expert Staff of the Minister of National Development Planning/ Head of Bappenas for Leading Products and Infrastructure, Deputy Chair of Commission V DPRP, Office of the Presidential Secretariat, Office of the Cabinet Secretary, KONI and former high-achieving Papuan athletes.


He continued about the diverse cultural characteristics in Papua in relation to human resources in Papua. Because when viewed from the cultural characteristics, Papua which consists of 29 regencies/cities and 466 ethnicities, the distribution is ecologically-geographically different between coasts, valleys, lakes, hills and islands.


From this diversity emerged various patterns, forms and characteristics of humans with their own characteristics. The height of coastal and coastal residents, such as Merauke, for example, has an average height of over 167 cm, higher than the inhabitants of the valleys and mountains, who have an average height of 149 cm. From this posture, it can be directed to certain sports such as basketball and volleyball.


At the end of his speech, he hoped that all sports stakeholders could understand the importance of Papua being designated as a sports province. "On behalf of the Papuan Provincial Government, I really hope that from today's event we can understand the importance of Papua being designated as a sports province.


Existing venues need to be put to good use. We really hope for the cooperation of the Government, KONI, KOI and all national sports stakeholders so that we have the same commitment to building Indonesian sports from where the sun first rose on the motherland.
